Karen Han, Erhu & her
love of music
Karen Han is a professional Er-Hu (a two-string classical
Chinese music Instrument) Soloist Professional Vocalist & Chinese
Music Composer. She is the youngest person who has acquired a Master &
Bachelor degree in Performance Arts from the Central Conservatory of Music
in Beijing, China. To date, Karen has already accumulated more than 20
years professional experiences in television, film, and live
performances.
About Karen
Han
Karen
Hua-Qi (Hwa-Chee) Han is an internationally renowned Er-Hu
virtuoso, composer and vocalist. The Er-Hu is
a classical Chinese instrument with two strings having all of
the tonal qualities of the violin. She has performed for
foreign dignitaries, and has played in many concerts
throughout the world. Her recording accomplishments include
Oscar winning movies,
television, radio
programs, and seven albums.
Karen is
the youngest person to ever receive a Masters Degree in
Performing Arts with Honors from China's best music academy,
the "Central Conservatory of Music." The academy's awards
include "Top Artist" and "First Class Er-Hu Soloist."
As a
child in China, Karen naturally gravitated toward her father's
instrument, the Er-Hu. Under his guidance, she grew proficient
in music, dance and song. She started the Er-Hu at the age of
six and in 1978, over a field of thousands of other
applicants, she was selected for admittance to China's renown
Central Conservatory of Music. |
|
Since
graduation, Karen has frequently performed for visiting foreign
dignitaries such as former President Jimmy Carter, former Prime
Minister Margaret Thatcher, and world-renowned tenor Luciano
Pavarotti. In 1985, she was invited to join the Best Chinese Young
Artists Group which toured more than 15 cities in the U.S. In 1991,
Karen was invited to perform at the "Prague Spring Festival" in
Czechoslovakia. Recently, she played for China's President Jiang
Zemin.
Enamored with
the West and encouraged by Hollywood contracts, Karen moved to Los
Angeles in 1988. Since her arrival, Warner Brothers, Hollywood
Pictures and HBO have all employed her talents.
 |
In 1997, she was honored to perform at the world
renown Hollywood Bowl with accompaniment by the Hollywood Bowl
Orchestra. In a concert with the New West Symphony, she
performed as a soloist, the "Gates of Gold," a world premier
Er-Hu and orchestra concerto. |
The composer
Joseph Curiales quickly learned that composing for the Er-Hu solo
was especially difficult. As originally written, the second movement
was impossible to play and had to be transposed into another key.
The challenge for the Er-Hu occurs in rapid passages with large
tonal leaps. On a violin, a jump of an octave may entail shifting a
finger only an inch or so, or to another of the four strings.
However, with the Er-Hu's two free floating strings and longer neck,
the player must reach perhaps six inches. It took an Er-Hu virtuoso
of Karen's caliber to make it happen. She ranks as one of the best
players in the world and a cultural treasure.
The Er-Hu
(pronounced ARE-who) is a two stringed Chinese violin dating back
well over a thousand years. The Er-Hu has a tiny hexagonal sound box
covered with snake skin and a long slender neck. The horsehair of
the bow runs under the strings, so the bow cannot be separated from
the instrument. It is played vertically, like a cello, but perched
on the player's left leg. In the West, we define progress as the
replacement of tradition. In China, we view it differently in that
"progress adds to tradition." Thus, this ancient instrument remains
popular today.
We have
all heard Karen's Er-Hu in movies like "The Joy Luck Club" and
"The Last Emperor" as well as numerous television scores. "The
Last Emperor" won an Oscar for Best Original Music. There, her
playing of the musical score was remarkable, not only for its
intricacy, but also for the emotion it conveyed. She brought
forth from her diminutive instrument a song of poignancy and
power.
Karen
presently serves as the Music Director of the Hollywood
Chinese Musicians Ensemble and despite her demanding recording
and performance schedule she established the "Chinese Strings
Instrument Institute" in Los Angeles. Karen currently has
seven albums in circulation including four soundtrack
recordings. Karen also teaches privately. |

About Erhu
Er-Hu: The
Hu-Qin (Er-Hu) is a barbarian instrument said to have been brought
into China at the time of Han Dynasty (140 B.C.) It is a two string
bowed instrument with a tone similar to western viola, very soulful
and expressive. It is widely used outside and inside the Great Wall,
both the north and south banks of the Yangtze River and the Pearl
River area. In the North, the Er-Hu designates the type used in
Chinese orchestra and in solo, but in the South, it is called
Nan-Hu.
In classical
Chinese music the Hu-Qin is melodic, haunting, beautiful, exquisite,
ever changing, and alive. The traditional style of playing is rich
in ornamentation, giving the music a deep, three-dimensional
quality. The basic method of playing the Er-Hu is the same, but its
application and style differ according to each area.
Er-Hu, is
the most popular and typical of the Hu-Qin family, is
basically a mid-high-toned instrument whose mid-low tone
sounds forceful and lavish. Mid tone goes gentle and touching,
while high tone turns clear and bright. This flexible
character makes it possible for Er-Hu to perform tunes of a
variety of moods. It can be soft and flowing, and it can also
be strong and staccato; it is highly versatile. It is the main
melody-carrying instrument in the Chinese orchestra, capable
of solo and the most important accompanying instrument in
various folk stages.
The two
strings of Er-Hu are fixed at quinta, usually d-a.
